Hiatus Resolution Strategies in Non-rhotic English: The Case of /r/-Liaison
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper looks at the different hiatus resolution strategies in potential cases of /r/-liaison in nonrhotic English. Potential contexts of /r/-liaison were identified in a corpus of BBC newscasts and analysed auditorily and acoustically for the occurrence of /r/-liaison, glottal stops, creaky voice or hiatus. The results show that /r/-liaison is a common hiatus-breaking strategy although there are significant differences between linking /r/ and intrusive /r/. They also show that glottal hiatusbreaking strategies are common and that creaky voice is more frequent than true glottal stops while hiatus is not very frequent. The discussion focuses on the reason why glottal strategies seem to be gaining ground as opposed to the use of /r/.

Anticipatory planning of r-insertion in Australian English
In non-rhotic Australian English, glottalization and ‘r’ insertion are strategies used to separate contiguous heterosyllabic vowels (hiatus). This study examined hiatus breaking strategies to determine whether realisation and incidence differed as a function of prosodic context. We were also interested in whether inserted ‘r’ exhibited preplanning. In an elicited production task, 14 nonrhotic A...

The paper reports findings of a production experiment investigating the realisation of post-vocalic /r/ produced by native (L1) speakers of English and German and late second language (L2) learners of two varieties of English; one rhotic variety spoken in Belfast and one non-rhotic variety spoken in Oxford. The study aims to explore whether there is a difference in the realisation of post-vocal...
متن کاملThe Treatment of Vowels Preceding 'r' in a Keyword Lexicon of English
Work is progressing on a keyword lexicon aimed at enabling the synthesis of various regional accents of English. This paper focuses on a particular issue, that of vowels before orthographic 'r'. These vowels are discussed with respect to rhotic and nonrhotic accents, in terms of both keyword sets and phonetic realisation. Criteria for the use of keysymbols are discussed, and it is noted that th...
متن کاملIs there any Evidence of Rhoticity in Historical Australian English?
Abstract Australian English is traditionally regarded as having been non-rhotic throughout its history, but a recent study by Trudgill and Gordon (2006) has found rhoticity levels of 1% to 20% in audio recordings of six Australian men born near the end of the 19th century, suggesting that Australian English was once a rhotic dialect. The present study re-examines the three most rhotic speakers ...
متن کاملHiatus resolution in American English : the case against glide insertion
It has generally been assumed that after non-low vowels in English, hiatus is resolved by inserting a homorganic glide (e.g., ‘seeing’ [sijɪŋ], Ito and Mester 2009). However, despite suspicions that inserted glides may be fundamentally different from lexical glides (e.g., Cruttenden 2001), a systematic phonetic investigation of the purported glide has never been carried out. We examine the natu...
